Today I did the grunt work I mentioned in my last post. I reformatted the four files I have up on Smashwords to include an updated “Other works” list, cover art stock photo acknowledgments, and some general tidying of the layout. The updates are live on Smashwords now, and should filter out to the other sales sites within the next couple weeks.
I also took the time to expand some of my descriptions, mostly because of a rather appalled review I saw on bn.com. I think at times we, as authors, as people, forget that what is in our heads is not necessarily in other people’s heads, and I’m so jaded that, honestly, I don’t get offended easily. Thus, it surprises me when other people do. I see it all the time: people complain about book covers, or Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition, or the music we play in the store, or idiotic protests of heavenly Oreo cookies. So, perhaps when I was writing a certain description, I wasn’t… blunt enough. So probably someone was a little surprised, and “Cowpoke” is, probably, a dark story.
It’s funny today, but I was a bit sad at the vitriolic review at first. Certainly, that person is entitled to their opinion, and, hey, that is what reviews are for. But I have to take it as a review more of my lack of warning in my description than anything. I learned my lesson about that.
Also, COUPON! Smashwords is running a summer reading sort of promotion, and I decided to join up at the 50% off level. Until the end of July, just two short weeks, you can check out Those Who Howl for just 99 cents if you download it from Smashwords.com and enter in the coupon code SSW50 at checkout. Any popular format is available through Smashwords.com. This price is also available directly at Amazon.com until the end of July 2012 as well, no coupon necessary (or at least, will be when the changes update in the next day or so).
So, that was my day, all that plus 7 hours at work on about two hours of sleep. Good thing I didn’t decide to nap, between the rogue thunderstorm and three phone calls I’ve gotten since I got home today. Productive, relatively, though I’m still using my to-do list as a mouse pad.
The one thing I really should work on, and i’m not sure I have that much more energy today (though some caffeine infiltrated my herbal iced tea because I’m awfully awake for practically not sleeping last night). I have a story I’ve been intending to include in my next two-story publication, one that I posted on my long-defunct website years ago. When I went to polish it up, I hated so much about it that I instantly began to think of ways to improve it. Now, it sits on the hard drive, ripped to shreds and heaving with tears and exhaustion and I have no idea how to craft it into something that works, without trashing the whole thing and just doing something else. I suppose I could change the names through first, get that out of the way, since Isabella was ruined for me by Twilight and Brys, well, it’s funny that there’s a gigolo show on HBO and one of the dudes is named Bryce, but that means it just will NOT work for this story. LOL
Anyway, between not being able to make sense of the story here (and the dream the story came from made even LESS sense, of course) and having a second story I’ve been cutting until it looks like someone with way too much plastic surgery and pasting until it’s patched and bloated and a bit Frankenstein-y, well, I’m a bit frustrated. I haven’t had the energy to give these things the devotion they deserve.
Geez, I sound like someone who is trying to rationalize giving away their dog.
Maybe I ought to quite whining about it and get to work!
